Palliative care is the specialised and holistic care of someone diagnosed with an advanced, progressive terminal illness.
Ballan District Health & Care’s palliative care is multi-disciplinary, which means patients can access a range of specialised medical, nursing, allied health and support services. This eliminates the need for very ill people in our community to move out of town to receive this level of care.
BDHC’s highly trained nursing and support staff members have a deep understanding of the needs of the dying and can offer compassionate, sensitive and evidence-based care across our residential aged care hostel, nursing home and hospital (which includes a dedicated palliative care suite).
The aim of our palliative care is to maximise the quality of the person’s life and to help them live well as they die. This is achieved by coordinating and delivering a range of services in response to each patient’s individual needs and the needs of their family and friends.
Our palliative care service embraces the physical, spiritual, psychological and emotional needs of the dying and includes:
- Expertise in pain and symptom management
- Help with financial, employment, parenting and other issues that can arise as a consequence of being diagnosed with a terminal illness
- Emotional support for patient and their families and carers, and
- Inpatient care.
